How hot does it get in an Upstate summer?
Anderson's July average high is 90.7°F, based on NOAA 1991–2020 normals. The muggy season runs from about May 24 to September 21, with roughly 18 muggy days in July. A plastic unit sitting in full sun gets warmer inside than the air around it. That heat affects odor, comfort and service timing.
The warm season runs from about May 20 to September 23. That covers most of the building season and most outdoor weddings, reunions and ball tournaments. Plan your restroom setup around those 4 months.
Why does heat make porta potty odor worse?
Heat speeds up bacteria in the holding tank. Warm waste breaks down faster and gives off more gas, and the vents push that smell around the unit. Blue deodorizer has to work harder as the tank fills. A unit used by 15 people a day in July needs more attention than the same unit in March.
Odor is mostly a function of 3 things: heat, how full the tank is, and time since the last service. You can't change the weather. You can change the other two with more frequent service and the right number of units.

(864) 209-8789Free quoteHow often should a summer porta potty be serviced?
Every rental of 7 days or more gets weekly service included. In June through August, crews of 10 or more workers often need a second weekly visit. Crews over 20 need more units under OSHA 1926.51, not just more visits. Each visit pumps, washes, sanitizes, refills deodorizer and restocks paper and sanitizer.
| Crew size | OSHA minimum | Our summer recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–9 workers | 1 toilet | 1 unit, weekly service |
| 10–20 workers | 1 toilet | 1 unit, twice-weekly service, plus a hand wash |
| 21–40 workers | 1 seat and 1 urinal for each 40 workers | 2 units, twice-weekly service |
The legal minimum comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Our recommendation goes further for comfort. Confirm your needs with your contractor; this isn't legal advice.
Where should you place a unit to keep it cooler?
Put the unit in shade whenever you can, such as the north side of a building or under tall trees with no low limbs. Turn the door away from the afternoon sun. Avoid dark asphalt in full sun. Keep the unit at least 10 feet from tents and food prep, and leave a clear path for the pump truck.
Shade from a building is better than shade from a tree. Branches can drop on the roof in a storm, and sap and leaves collect on the vent. On open jobsites with no shade, the unit's light-colored shell helps, and service frequency matters more.
Ground still matters in summer. Afternoon storms soak red clay fast, so read our red clay placement guide too.
What does blue deodorizer actually do?
Blue deodorizer goes into the tank at every service visit. The blue dye hides the tank contents, and the deodorizer cuts odor and slows bacteria between visits. Deodorizer works best in a tank that isn't overfilled. Deodorizer is not a substitute for pumping. That is why weekly service is included on rentals of 7 days or more.
In July, a tank with 3 days of heavy use has more to fight than a fresh tank. That's why an extra mid-week visit does more than a stronger dose. Each visit starts the tank over with clean water and fresh deodorizer.
How much hand sanitizer and paper does a summer crew use?
A standard PJN3 unit holds 2 toilet paper rolls and a hand sanitizer dispenser. Sweaty summer crews use sanitizer faster. A two-station PolyJohn Bravo hand wash holds 22 gallons, enough for about 350 hand washes per fill. We suggest 1 two-station hand wash per 4 toilets, refilled at each service.
Roofers, masons and landscapers handle hot, dirty materials all day. Soap and water clean better than sanitizer alone. A hand wash station next to the unit gets used far more than one across the lot.

(864) 209-8789Free quoteWhat should events plan for on a hot weekend?
Event units arrive cleaned and fully stocked, and a 1 to 3 day event usually needs no mid-event service. Large crowds in July are the exception. For a festival or tournament over 2 days, ask about a mid-event pump. Add 1 or 2 extra units if guests will drink lots of water and lemonade.

Size the event with the porta potty calculator. For big crowds, see festival porta potties.
How can you tell a unit needs service before the scheduled day?
Watch for 4 signs that a unit needs service early. The smell is strong at the door. The tank level is near the top of the bowl. Toilet paper or sanitizer is gone. Workers start using the woods instead. Call or text us when you see any of these, and we add a visit to the next route.
Our trucks run Upstate routes Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A mid-week visit usually fits into a route that's already nearby. Long-term customers can make an extra visit a standing summer order from June through August.
Questions renters ask before booking
Do extra summer service visits cost more than the weekly one?
Weekly service is included in every rental of 7 days or more, starting at $155 per 28-day cycle for a standard unit. Extra visits are added as their own line on the quote. You approve the price before we schedule them.
Should my roofing crew get a unit with a sink in July?
A deluxe unit with a sink, starting at $295 for an event, or a separate hand wash station, starting at $95 per 28-day cycle, both give crews running water. Roofers in July sweat more and wash more often. OSHA 1926.51(f) covers washing facilities on construction sites.
Will the unit smell if it sits in full sun for a weekend party?
A freshly cleaned unit with new deodorizer handles a 1 to 3 day party well, even in July. Shade helps the most. For crowds over about 150, ask about adding units or a mid-event service visit.
Is it safe to put a porta potty on hot asphalt?
Asphalt is a fine flat surface, but it soaks up heat and warms the unit's floor and tank. Move the unit to a shaded edge of the lot when you can. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide, so it fits easily in one parking space.
Can you cut my long-term unit back to every other week in winter?
Weekly service stays standard year-round for hygiene, starting at $155 per 28-day cycle. Winter use is lighter, but paper, sanitizer and deodorizer still need a weekly restock. Summer is when we suggest adding visits.
