What's inside a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty from Noah Rental Works has 1 toilet seat over a 60-gallon holding tank and 1 wall urinal. The unit comes with 2 rolls of toilet paper and a hand sanitizer dispenser. Roof vents pull air out of the unit, and blue deodorizer in the tank keeps odor down.
Every standard unit leaves our yard washed, sanitized and stocked. You open the door to a toilet seat, a urinal on the side wall, two rolls of paper and a hand sanitizer pump.

The door has an occupied latch so guests can tell when the unit is in use. The translucent roof lets in daylight, so most people never need a flashlight before dark.
What a standard unit does not have: running water, a flush or a sink. If you want those, compare the deluxe flushing unit with a sink or add a two-station hand wash next to the toilet.
PolyJohn PJN3 tech specs
The PolyJohn PJN3 stands 91 inches tall, 43.5 inches wide and 47 inches deep. The PJN3 weighs about 165 pounds empty and holds 60 gallons of waste. Those numbers decide where the PJN3 can go, how many people the unit serves and how often the tank needs pumping.
| Spec | PolyJohn PJN3 |
|---|---|
| Height | 91 in |
| Width | 43.5 in (plan on 44 in) |
| Depth | 47 in |
| Empty weight | 165 lb |
| Holding tank | 60 gal |
| Fixtures | Toilet seat, urinal |
| Supplies | 2 toilet paper rolls, hand sanitizer |
| Ventilation | Roof vents |
Specs come from the PolyJohn PJN3 product page. A full tank weighs far more than 165 lb, which is why units are never moved once they are in use.

(864) 209-8789Free quoteWill a standard unit fit through my gate?
A standard unit needs at least 44 inches of clear width, so a 36-inch garden gate is too narrow. Most double gates and 48-inch gates work. The driver moves the unit on a hand truck, so the path also needs firm ground and no steps between the truck and the spot.
| What's between the truck and the spot | Fits a standard unit? | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| 36-in garden gate | Too narrow | Set the unit outside the fence or open a second gate panel |
| 48-in or double gate | Fits | Tell us about latches or gate codes |
| Steps or a steep slope | Hard to move a loaded hand truck | Pick a spot on the driveway side |
| Soft lawn after rain | Wheels sink in red clay | Driveway edge, gravel pad or plywood |
| Low wires or branches | Unit is 91 in tall | Check overhead clearance before we arrive |
Send a photo of the spot and the path by text and we will tell you before delivery day whether the unit fits.
Where a standard unit fits best
A standard unit fits best where people need 1 clean toilet for short visits: backyard parties, home remodels, roofing jobs, ball fields and farm work. The PJN3 has a small 44-inch footprint, needs no power or water, and can sit on a driveway edge. Most jobs need just 1 or 2.
- Home remodels: keeps crews out of the house bathroom during a kitchen or bath job. See our home remodel porta potty tips.
- Roofing and painting: a week-long job with one unit at the driveway edge.
- Birthday parties and cookouts: one unit plus sanitizer covers most backyard gatherings of 50 guests for an afternoon.
- Ball fields and practice fields: a season-long unit with weekly service.
- Farms and hunting land: no hookup needed, just truck access.

When is a standard unit the wrong choice?
A standard unit is the wrong choice when guests expect a flush and a sink, when a wheelchair user will attend, or when 150+ guests stay all evening. The PJN3 has a raised step and no running water. In those cases, a deluxe unit, an accessible unit or a restroom trailer serves people better.
| Your situation | Better option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Formal wedding, older guests | Deluxe flushing unit or VIP cabin | Flush, sink and more room |
| A guest uses a wheelchair | Wheelchair-accessible unit | Ground-level floor and 60-in turning space |
| Food served, no sink nearby | Standard unit plus a hand wash station | Soap and water beat sanitizer for greasy hands |
| Long reception, power and hose on site | Restroom trailer | Climate control and vanity sinks |
How we set a standard unit on your property
Setting a standard unit is quick once the truck parks. The driver calls about 30 minutes ahead, rolls the unit to your marked spot, levels the unit and checks the door. You do not need to be home if the spot has cones, stakes, ribbon or a texted photo.
- Mark the spot with cones, stakes or ribbon, or text us a photo.
- Tell us about gates, slopes, steps and any gate code when you book.
- The driver calls about 30 minutes before arrival, inside our 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. window.
- The driver sets the unit on the flattest firm ground and checks that the door closes and latches.
- For storms, the unit gets staked or anchored.
- When you are done, call or text and we pick the unit up. Weekend events stay through Monday at no extra charge.
How many standard units do you need?
For an event up to 4 hours, plan 1 standard unit per 50 guests. For longer events, multiply guests by hours and divide by 200, then round up. Add 20 percent when alcohol is served, with a minimum of 1 more unit. A crew of 20 or fewer needs 1 unit.
| Group | Standard units |
|---|---|
| 50 guests, 3 hours | 1 |
| 100 guests, 4 hours | 2 |
| 100 guests, 6 hours | 3 |
| 100 guests, 6 hours, beer served | 4 |
| Crew of 8 on a 3-week job | 1 with weekly service |
Run your own numbers on the porta potty sizing calculator. If any guest uses a wheelchair, make one of the units accessible.
Questions renters ask before booking
What does 'standard' mean, and is a urinal included?
Standard means our PolyJohn PJN3: one toilet seat, one urinal, two rolls of toilet paper and a hand sanitizer pump. There is no flush or sink. Every standard unit is washed and restocked before it leaves the yard.
How much is a standard porta potty for a weekend party?
Is my party unit one of the beat-up construction ones?
Event units are picked for appearance: clean walls, working latches and a fresh stock of paper and sanitizer. Tell us it is for a party and we send a blue, gray or pink event unit.
Can it go in the backyard, or do you leave it at the curb?
We roll the unit to the spot you choose, including the backyard, as long as the path is at least 44 inches wide with firm ground and no steps. A 36-inch garden gate is too narrow.
Does a standard unit come with a hand washing station?
A hand wash station is a separate rental. The standard unit has hand sanitizer inside. For food or messy work, we suggest one two-station hand wash per four toilets, which starts at $95 for an event.
Can we haul the standard unit ourselves on our trailer?
Customers may not haul or move units. Our driver places and picks up every unit so the tank stays sealed and nobody gets hurt. If the spot needs to change mid-rental, call us and we move the unit.
Will the standard unit tip over in a storm?
A standard unit set on level, firm ground rarely tips, and we stake or anchor units on request before storms. Tipping damage from moving or rough use is billed to the renter, so leave the unit where the driver set it.
